History
Shared Branching was
originally created by credit unions in individual states. The
credit unions joined in cooperative agreements allowing members
from one credit union to use another credit union's facilities that were
more conveniently located to conduct their transactions.
The CU Service Corporation was created in 1987 to unify the
individual state Shared
Branching organizations into one national network. The first
Credit Union Service Center was opened in 1993 in Birmingham, AL.
The idea of Shared Branching has been spreading like wildfire ever
since.
In 1999, the Ohio Credit Union League
brought the Credit Union Service Corporation to Ohio. Ohio began
participating in Shared Branching with only six credit unions. Now
over 20 Ohio credit unions are currently participating with over 47
total branches.
