Political Action Committees

With one of the largest political action funds in the country, the Ohio Credit Union Legislative Action Committee and Ohio Credit Union League Political Action Committee support worthy candidates for state and federal offices who back credit union principles.

The Ohio Credit Union Legislative Action Committee (OCULAC) is the state political action committee (PAC). Regulated by the Ohio Secretary of State, its funds are primarily used to support candidates running for the Ohio General Assembly and statewide offices such as governor, treasurer, and attorney general. Occasionally, OCULAC funds are also given to candidates in local races, such as city council or township, when a credit union friend can be identified. Only personal contributions are allowed to the OCULAC due to strict election finance guidelines and tracking requirements.

The Ohio Credit Union League Political Action Committee (OCULPAC) -- the federal PAC -- gives funds to candidates for federal office, primarily those running for U.S. Representative or Senator. While some OCULPAC dollars are given directly to federal candidates, the vast majority of the funds are sent to the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC), a federal PAC overseen by the Credit Union National Association. Only credit unions that have signed an OCULPAC Permission Agreement are able to solicit funds from staff members for OCULPAC.

Thank you to the following people who donated at the highest levels ($250 or more) to the Ohio credit union political action committees in 2015. Contributions are used to support legislators and candidates who stand up to promote and defende credit unions against the voices that detract from the cooperative model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why should credit unions even care about the election process?
A: With or without credit union involvement, there will be elections. Those elected will determine the fate of the credit union movement. Either we are involved in the process and shape the outcome, or we will let bankers and other interests do it for us.

Q: What role do PAC contributions play in the process?
A: Political action committee (PAC) contributions are an important tool in building legislative relations. Our elected officials are making decisions that will either enable your credit union to better serve your members --- or prevent you from doing so.

Q: Who receives OCULAC/OCULPAC contributions?
A: OCULAC/OCULPAC contributions support candidates who:
--Show a commitment to understanding credit unions and the challenges facing them
--Have a proven voting record and position on issues impacting credit unions
--Have an important committee assignment or leadership role

Q: Why can’t credit unions just stay out of the political arena?
A: Whether you like it or not, you are involved in politics. Government officials make decisions every day that could potentially affect the way credit unions do business.

Q: Can credit unions make PAC contributions?
A: No. Campaign finance law requires contributions to political action committees be personal and voluntary. Corporate contributions cannot be accepted.
